The typographic grid is a coherent page structure made by arranging guidelines vertically and horizontally across the page surface, resulting in distinct, convenient subdivisions of space. A well-executed grid system allows the designer to make sense of complex, often visually incongruous elements.
The student develops and refines a grid system based on the information’s functional and aesthetic imperatives. Page margins, text and image areas, columns, inter-column spacing and horizontal flow lines emerge from this process of structural refinement.
